Hi – I’m Slava Basovich, a documentary photographer and filmmaker with over 10 years of portrait photography experience. I know how precious and fleeting this time in your life can be, which is why my work strives to capture the real emotion and energy of this moment in time. As the proud father of a rambunctious toddler, I've also perfected the art of photographing very fast moving children! I have lived in Berkeley and San Francisco for almost 20 years and I love shooting in the Bay Area, one of the greatest backdrops in the world! While completing my MFA degree, I started a small photography company to give families an alternative to the traditional family portrait.I work in a discreet photo-journalistic approach, allowing you to be present with your family and focus on what’s important. Unlike other photographers (who make you buy prints directly from them at exorbitant rates), I provide you with full-resolution, museum quality jpegs so you can make albums and prints on your own for a fraction of the cost. A few fun facts about me – I met my wife in kindergarten when we were six years old; as an undergraduate I taught a history course on The Simpsons, and I’ve travelled to 34 countries. I love to play guitar for my daughter and I’m committed to fighting for social justice and marriage equality!

Slava took the photos and videos for my husband's and my wedding in 2011. Not only was he willing to drive about an hour and a half to our house to take photos on our wedding day, he didn't mind doing part of our engagement shoot at our house as well, just to help us feel better about the set up. (And, in fact, he gave us a great suggestion to change the direction of our aisle, which we never would have thought to do ourselves! Thanks, Slava!) Slava and his team got beautiful photos at both shoots, including our family and friends (ranging in age from 1 to 84) and our energetic dog. He was willing to traipse through redwoods and drive windy roads to get the perfect shots, and he made sure everyone was laughing and having fun while he did it. Everyone looks happy and relaxed in the photos - probably because we were, thanks in large part to Slava's friendliness, calm, and expertise throughout the day. It was sort of like getting a photographer/videographer, a wedding coordinator, and a therapist all in one! We asked for some of the required posed family photos, which turned out beautifully, but Slava's genius really shines in the candid shots - the two of us dancing with our parents, guests reuniting (or meeting each other for the first time) with big smiles and hugs, and our dog leaping through the air to catch a stick. From detail shots to pictures of just the two of us, we got all the different types of photos we wanted from Slava, and they were all far more beautiful than we could have expected. My husband and I don't have kids yet, but if we do someday, I already know who I'd ask to handle our family photo shoots!
